GRAVITY holds in greenhouse gases. GRAVITY. What is far more curious is that chlorine gas is a heavy, dense gas that pools in low places in our atmosphere. However, it can still get up there to destroy the ozone. Ever heard of CFCs? Chlorofluorocarbons. Chlorine and Fluorine compounds. Man-made, I believe, but they provide evidence that Chlorine compounds can reach the upper atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide resides at most levels of our atmosphere, and could have caused some global warming, but the broken down ozone layer resulted in a cooler Earth. Yes, it is cooler now than it was then.

It's a pretty good theory, but awfully tricky to prove. The siesmic waves from the impact would have taken just a few hours to get to the other side of the globe. More precise dating for the beginning of the volcanic activity is needed, but there is a strong possibility of a link.

Wow these are all interesting, contravercial, and unprobable theories. Unless anyone owns a time machine. If you do own one let me know i want to rent it for a while!

I have yet another brilliant theory, Yes one that hasnt been listed as of yet, and i might as well throw it in this bucket of mystery. As none of these other theories have an ounce of proof more than mine.

The Earth wasnt hit by asteroids that wiped out dinos, volcanos didnt wipe the face of the Earth, these things may have happened, but they happen all the time. The truth is.........................

THE EARTH WAS ATTACKED BY ALIENS, THATS RIGHT , I SAID IT!!!!!

The Earth was attacked by aliens who needed a test grounds for a science project. So they exterminated the dinos, and when the atmosphere was suitable for their needs they deposited the many life forms they saw fit to inhabit the planet to sustain life for all of the different species. They calculated the evolutionary process, and using advanced calculations and pridictions disigned everything around us today. They chose the Earth because of its rich resources, and suitable atmospheric qualities, nothing more.

Humans, well what can I  say, we are simply a rejected science project discarded by aliens because of our low intellectual abilities. They were trying to make a sub species usable for interstellar war, because of their frail composition. But as opposed to their intelligence we are simply retarded, and the project was futile.

Discouraged with the insult of failure the elite alien race deposited the humans on Earth to see if evolution would prove their theory correct , and redeem them. Basically we are nothing more than an ant farm for a superior race. Thats why we have UFO sightings, they are simply monitoring their experiment. The supposed abductions are to analyze evolutionary data. Dont forget area 51, where do you think the government gets its technology from?

Think outside the limited box of assumed propoganda, the bible is a good story to scare people into behaving as a society of zombies lead by the rich. Basically it says if you are bad we will torment your soul for eternity in hell. But our planet has many religions, and I find it hard to believe that an all loving god would suffer 2/3 of the population of the world to hell for not knowing Jesus Christ is their savior. It is simply futile to support the bible as the way to heaven.

Atleast my theory is a possibility, that could have happened, and can be explained from rational thinking. Unless you are so self absorbed, and vain that you could possibly assume we are the only life in many galaxies.

in the past everything was bigger, humans were 70 feet tall. so even animals would be bigger. think a 70 foot tall alligator or lion! that's what those huge animals were. they didn't become extinct, just got smaller, just like us humans! (science confirmed that humans were 70 ft tall.)

Im no scientist but...too second what jay said...not only were humans and dinosaurs separated by time and how could they co-exist with such creatures.My theory is the earth was destroyed by this asteriod but what cause the asteriod?the bible tells of this was in heaven where the devil was seen falling from heaven like a star.nuff said

Ain't science grand?  It's amazing to me that we keep searching for answers about everything and learning new things about events that happened millions of years ago!  

I must, along with Jaywalker-Jack, address the comments of the Biblical literalists.  The Bible is a wonderful book and has guided my life well.  When you insist upon a literal interpretation of the Good Book, you only make non-believers reject the whole message.  I personally believe that when man ate from the the Tree of Knowledge, God said, "You want to KNOW?  Go out there and LEARN!"  Why should we refuse to do so?  The world is an amazing place and I believe that God wants us to appreciate it in all its mysterious complexity!

To Mr. McLatchie, this is stating the obvious but you seem to be forgetting the solidly established dating methods which show  that dinosaurs and human beings are separated by vast epochs of time.

To rdean911, radio carbon dating is extremely inaccurate with very recent deposits. That is why it cannot be used to date, for example, human remains only several centuries old.

You should understand that radio carbon dating NEVER produces an exact date - only a date range, for example it can tell us something is between 5500 and 6000 years old. Where you do see an exact date, the radio carbon method has been cross referenced with tree ring dating.

Before you denounce radio carbon dating I suggest you learn how the method works.

I have every respect for the Bible, but much of it is not a literally true document. This is not an insult to the good book, it is just a simple fact. If you think it is all literally true, you have a very poor understanding of it. I'll give you an example of what I'm talking about - take Genesis. When the author describes the order of creation, he is not recounting an actual event. Genesis was written during the Babylonian captivity (when the Hebrews were enslaved by the Babylonians). The Babylonians worshipped the sun and the moon, and Genesis states that God MADE the sun and the moon. The book of Genesis was meant as a religious/political statement, that the Jews were worshipping the right God. The story in which this message is brought across is not important, only the message itself.

Another example of why you cannot take the Bible as literal truth - the Gospels. The four gospels recount the SAME events, but recount them DIFFERENTLY. Why? because they were written by human beings, who are subject to bias, how good a memory they have, what they consider important enough to include, and so on.

I will say again, I have every respect for religious people, What I cannot understand, and Im sure you know Im not alone in this, is the fundamentalist/creationist approch to the world. Because it actually requires you to shut your eyes to basic facts about the world.

If youve read Orwell, you'll know what I mean when I say it is the closest thing to "doublethink" that happens in the real world.

I think it is most likely the dinosaurs were hunted to death by people. Bear in mind that the word 'dinosaur' was not even coined until 1841. People who co-existed with the great beasts used the term 'dragon'. China, Europe and the Middle East share similar accounts of “dragons” and other beasts. Some cultures revered these creatures. For instance, records of Marco Polo in China show that the royal house kept dragons for ceremonies. In other cultures, it was a great honor to kill these beasts. There are numerous records of warriors killing great beasts in order to establish credibility in a village.

Furthermore, in Texas and Dakotas, human bones and tools coexist in the same fossil layers as dinosaur bones. Likewise, footprints of dinosaurs, humans and other mammals have been found to coexist in the same fossil layers in Texas and New Mexico. Cave and cliff drawings in Utah and Colorado crudely depict certain dinosaur species (dated from 400 A.D. to 1300 A.D.).. Ceremonial burial stones discovered in Ica and  Per (dated from 500 to 1500 AD)  depict numerous species of dinosaurs, some in activities with man. Ceramic and stone figurines discovered in Acambaro, Mexico also represent many species of dinosaurs (dated from 800 B.C. to 200 A.D.).  

Finally,  in the Bible, Job writes of great creatures, Behemoth and Leviathan, nearly 4000 years ago. Although more recent Bible translations use elephant, hippo or crocodile instead, the original Hebrew does not allow for these interpretations. The word “dragon” (Hebrew: tannin) is used numerous times in the Old Testament, and most directly translates as “sea or land monsters.”

Here's a thought: Take a globe of the Earth, put your left index finger on the Yukatan and place your right index finger on the Deccan traps. Now remember the laws of physics: FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION.  Nuff said!

What scientists studying the asteroid theory found was the iridium layer at the KT boundary, and that this layer was very consistent, the iridium was only found in asteroids or comets, and the layer marked the boundary between the time of the dinosaurs and the next era after they died out, leaving primitive birds, small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles like crocodilians and turtles.  Does iridium come up from the earth (provided this element actually existed on this planet before the dnos went extinct) in sufficient quantities to explain the band of dark matter that marks the KT boundary, and how dino fossils are never found above that boundary?

Theory seems very sound.  Just curious if anyone is familar with another theory?  I read a study done in the early 90's that looked at fossilized tree sap.  They looked at the composition of the air in the air bubbles trapped in the tree sap.  What they found was that prior to 65mm years ago the O2 content of the earth was nearly 60%. At 65mm years ago it took a step change to the current content of 21%.  This means something suddenly sucked the O2 out of the atmoshphere and all large creatures suffocated.  I never could figure out how the huge long necked dino's  moved around with only 21% O2.  So the theory seemed to make sense.  So my questions are as follows:

1) Was the tree sap theory about a sudden change in O2 ever confirmed or disproved?

2) If it is true what sucked the O2 out of the atmosphere?

3) How about a coment composed mostly of H2.  Do such comets even exist?

Could not the asteroid impact have started the volcanic eruptions? India is almost directly opposite the planet from the Yucatan penninsula. The length of time required to deposit that much volcanic material may well have been several hundred thousand years.

I no geologist...just posing a thought.
