I'll bet "people in the king's inner circle" are distressed. They got careless and allowed people to see what they were doing this time. They were much more circumspect in 1976, or even 2006. This won't diminish the people's love for King Bhumibol, but it may make things more difficult for the next monarch.

No, actually the King may not play politics. No one is more acutely aware of the constraints on his role under the Constitution than the King himself. Throughout his reign, he was asked to intervene a number of times. But he repeatedly made it clear that he intended to abide by the Constitution and democratic principles. When he did intervene, in 1973 and 1992, it was to prevent the escalation of violence and blood on the streets. This non-political role is the source of his moral authority. The King knows that and has always been careful in using his reserve power. It would be completely out of character for him to back any political player or group. Sadly, the political hooligans who call themselves the People's Alliance for Democracy care nothing for his reputation and have brought the country to unprecedented chaos while claiming to act in his name.
Lese majeste is a crude law abused by politicians of all shades, and that include anti and pro Thaksin elements.
By now the situation becomes clear and very obvious that what has been happening in Thailand is just a conspiracy theory. Its King/Queen ARE the people, who are running behind all these. The orders are delegated/assigned to Thai's military and Democrat party and finally to implement as action via PAD, since they say it our loud to the world that the are not involved with politic but they never say that they are not going to sanction the people elected government. Taking over a couple of international airports in the very same day, now Democrat party becomes government, and PAD activists run free/fade-away is an obvious confirmation that who is behind all this. These people are just trying to rob the country and collapsing the Thai's democracy and justice system, to sacrifice for a TRULY WELL BEING of just a small group of people. If anyone do not know, Thai king is the richest king in the world,

Perhaps 35 billion is still not enough!? If fact, as a "KING", he could do a lot more than Thaksin to improve his Thai's citizen being/living quality but Thai's people never see these improve until Thaksin government come and improve all this stuffs. What this elite group of people is doing is just a propaganda to build their image, which resulting in intangible results. After all, I truly appreciate this article, so does the Economist publication on this very topic. We are in 21 century now, aren't we. To be honest, this is the very reason why now most of the Thai's people are trying to request international world to help us, including the UN, both officially/unofficially and most importantly this is why Thailand has been kept in third world.

This king-bashing sentiment is getting annoying because many Thais know that he's not to be blamed. The real mastermind behind the 19/9 coup and the key supporter of the antidemocratic PAD are not him but rather a very powerful woman who has been staging a series of extra-constitutional interventions all along. She runs the whole show and probably does not even realise that she's destroying the very foundation of the institution and thus undermining the reputation of her own family---in the eye of the international community. I recommend that if foreign journalists want to be critical, make sure they spot on the right person. Generalisation can backfire. But yeah..i do agree that banning the Economist magazine doesn't make sense anymore. It's faster to distribute the same content via the internet! Besides you'll end up reading banned publications and spreading words about them anyway.
I wonder how long its going to take Thai readers to flood this message board with insulting posts telling you that you arent entitled to an opinion in Thai politics, because you are a foreigner.
I live and work in Thailand, and while I love this country and its people, I hate the government and the elite, who demonstrated just how little they care for the well being of their countrymen when they took over the airport, choking off the vital tourist industry.
A single word from "he who shall not be named" could have stopped the occupation and saved hundreds of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars, yet he was curiously silent. What is the world supposed to think?
