OTTUMWA, Iowa--As I pass the 12-hour mark on Edwards'
all-night Marathon for the Middle Class, I'd like to issue a formal
apology to my serious, sober readers--you know, the ones who were
checking Stumper at 2:45 a.m. for "substance."
Sadly, I can't really tell you about Edwards' new
thinking on the Pakistani elections because, well, he's not saying
anything other than "I will fight for you" in three-minute bursts for
the benefit of the press. Trust me: supporters who stand
outside at 2:45 a.m. in this weather are already sold; he's not selling anyone in person. Edwards wants the rest of the state to see his "work ethic"--and for that he needs the cameras.
I can, however, tell you how he answered when one of
us here in Ottumwa asked if he was tired. "I never get tired," he said.
It was 7:15 in the morning. He looked at his questioner, then grinned
into the lens. "YOU look tired."
Oh, snap. Edwards may not get tired (or particularly substantive) on the all-night trail. But sassy? That's a different story.
