Hillary On Edge

Hillary Clinton grew visibly emotional during a session with undecided voters in Portsmouth today. Asked how she kept up the pace, she started her answer cheerily enough, joking how Web sites always captured her bad hair days. The she paused. Her eyes got red. And when she started speaking again, she appeared to be holding back tears. "I just don't want us to fall back as a nation," she said, her voice breaking. "As you can see, I take this very personally." Voice quavering, Clinton went on. "Some people think it's a game. We put ourselves out there against very difficult odds." It was a real and gripping moment, a dignified but visible display of the frustration and exhaustion Clinton faces on the day before what polls say will be an Obama rout.

It will be interesting to see how this plays. It was no Muskie moment, but betcha it'll be the tear that never fell but was seen around the world.
