Help for Hillary

Editors

NEWSWEEK's Jessica Ramirez files this report on a late-season movement for Hillary Clinton:

As Senator Hillary Clinton continues to rage against the dying of her campaign’s light, a number of her most fervent constituents have decided to lend a helping hand. The Ohio-based loyalists—mostly women—have founded “Clinton Supporters Count Too.” Their goal is to campaign against Senator Barack Obama in the general-election swing states of Ohio, Florida, Michigan and Pennsylvania, if he becomes the Democratic nominee.

According to Jamie Dixey, the 57-year-old group organizer, the media and the Democratic Party have displayed a sexist attitude aimed at Clinton throughout the primary season. Dixey argues the consensus among the Democratic female base is that, even though Clinton’s a better candidate, she’s not taken seriously because she’s a woman. The group is calling on superdelegates—decided and undecided—to start a public movement to coalesce around the New York senator. “If our superdelegates refuse to consider the consequences of nominating the weaker candidate, we cannot actively support her opponent who we believe to be unprepared to lead our country in these turbulent times,” they said in a statement released this week.

And just in case superdels decide to stick with Obama, some group members have expressed no qualms with considering a vote for Senator John McCain. Oddly enough, it was a comment made at a McCain campaign stop that planted the seed for the group’s creation. McCain was in South Carolina in November when a supporter asked, “how do we beat the ***?” The “***” the woman was referring to was Clinton. McCain tried to laugh off the question, adding that he respected the Senator. Later, he told reporters that he made light of the situation because he wanted to move past the remark. He may have moved past it, but Dixey did not. “***” might as well have been a call to arms. It prompted hundreds of supporters, who are now part of the team, to e-mail her and vent their frustrations over what was said. (Dixey was working as the Clinton campaign’s grassroots organizer in Ohio at the time.) “The thing that I’m most ashamed of is that we women sat there and let it happen,” she says. “I asked myself, ‘why didn’t we do anything earlier,’ and the answer was that we trusted that the party was doing what needed to be done and it would all shake out in the end.”

Things have started to shake out but not the way Dixey and other Clinton faithful hoped they would. Obama leads in the popular vote, pledged delegates and super delegates. Clinton may be “the candidate of [their] choice,” but the numbers say more people choose Obama. Even Clinton—who has no affiliation with this group—has said publicly that it would be a “grave error” not to vote for the Illinois senator if he becomes the Democratic nominee. But that’s not stopping these ladies from pressing forward.

Their first demonstration will take place Tuesday during the Oregon and Kentucky primaries. The group plans to boycott NBC affiliates across the country in light of the “sexist and misogynist attitude” that’s prevailed on the network toward the former First Lady. “It’s only the beginning,” Dixey says of their crusade. The reality is that, with only five primaries left, it’s probably pretty close to the end.

The post below doesn't seem to understand the intricacies of the democratic primary process. The media and Obama's supporters are NOT picking the race- they are simply pointing out that Clinton has no reasonable chance, no likely chance at all, of passing Obama in the delegates earned unless the superdelegates decide to override the will of the people and pick Clinton despite the fact that she's won less delegates. So, no-one is trying to push Clinton out, but, she simply cannot win at this point unless the super d's decide to implode the democratic party.

Hillary has been treated with much respect. The amount of disrespect she's gotten is equal to that received by Obama. HIllary supporters seem to forget now that Hillary styles herself as the outsider underdog that for years she has been seen as the prohibitive front-runner and all the democratic "elites" lined up behind her and endorsed her. Now that she's losing and has run a divisive and racist campaign to boot, they're deserting her for the more positive message of Obama.

I have a question- if Hillary's supporters are so enflamed that "it's not over til it's over" then why don't they agitate to get Edwards, Kucinich, et al. back in the race too?

Hillary Clinton is a Presidential Canidate for these United States and she deserves to be treated with the respect and dignity that each canidate is treated with.  Hillary Clinton is NOT running for Vice-President she is running for President.  The race is NOT over and all of America has not voted yet.  What is it that the media cannot understand?  America does not want them picking our next President or Obama picking our next President.  Do not take our votes and freedom away from us. We are Americans!

The question that should be asked is: "Does the American public want the media to elect their next President?" The world is shocked and amazed at how the media in the United States has treated a Presendential candidate for The United States of America. The democratic process of electing a President has been thrown to the wind and equal coverage has not been given to Hillary Clinton. The media has already elected THEIR canidate and vowing to the American public true and just coverage reporting, which should be unbiased has left a bad taste in the mouths of the American public. The media did not give accurate or just coverage of West Virginia. They did not ask why Obama did not even try in WV and why he is in Iowa and totally neglecting Oregon and Kentucky. Obviously those states do not matter. How may Americans do not matter to Obama? A revolution is in the forecast, if Americans cannot get fair and just coverage of a candidate without being "influenced" by the media, then as in history past, do Americans need to go "underground"? This is a perfect time to protest and as in history past, get the truth out with "underground" newspapers. Just like the civil war, the slaves, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King the truth will set us free! Just when is it just and fair to watch a 20 minute speech given by an endorsee and cutting off Hillary Clintons' over 2-1 win WV? To have a discussion on the issues facing the candidates and only have Obama supporters represented has sunk the media to a new low. Ask any American, and they will tell you they are not tired of this race for the democratic party going on, they are tired of the media being biased and unjust in not only their portrayal of President candidate Hillary Clinton, but they are tired of not having a voice, a chance to vote, yes, all votes counted, and they are tired of hearing that this race is over when in reality it is definitely not over! Let America be heard, every vote counts, every state counts, and thank God Hillary has the guts and determination to go forth and make this nation once again the Democratic process, the Democratic freedom that so many have fought for. All the way to the convention floor-we will be heard, we will vote, we will have a say on who are next President is, we are Americans!

M.Gubbons speaks out for America!
