What you mean is...i'd rather have any White Man, as President...and a Dim Witted White Female to take his Place, otherthan a Highly Qualified Bi-Racial Man and his Qualified White male Vice Presidential Runningmate.....
Sounds like the Biggest Bigoted Comment EVER

Give me the 2 Overly Qualified candidates...You can keep your UnQualified Aryans..OK
Andrew Romano, please remember what you recently wrote. You said Obama should hit back. Now he is hitting and you are hitting him. People say the guy is soft and when he hits back they complain. What should he do?. McCain has no pity. Obama measures his attacks. I believe that there should be civility. But with McCain, it seems it is always a fight. Palin is on the attack and like a pitfull too. Obama has to touch a nerve. The nerve is McCains age. He is out of date and that should be hammered in . As far as I am concerned it is irrelevant whether he has started to use the computer now. The fact that he had not learned all these years shows an aspect of his character.
I do not buy the excuse of his arm. There a many people with disabilities who use the computers. I know people who use their toes. The guy is just not ahead. And what amazes me is the fact that as a former pilot that he did not have the interests to learn to go on the Internet. That shows a lack of push in some respects.
Now some people will say that he has learnt to surf on the net. Well like with everything else McCain changes to accommodate and please voters. He has done this many times in this campaign. This is not new. It is all aimed at winning.
His age is a factor. Obama should stress on that. They are stressing on Obama's age too. So what is the difference. Unfortunately in such attacks there is bound to be misinformation to some extent. It is like collateral damage.
Obama cannot win by being the constant nice guy. He must now and very hard, as all of his supporters are saying, hit back at McCain. As for Palin, I leave her to herself. I was very embarassed to while listening to her interviews. And what is sad is that she feels that she can charm her way while saying rubbish. May God help us all.
Obama has no respect of SENIOR CITIZENS when he plays the age card. He is totally disrespectful to the Veterans who have faught our wars. Obama hates the military given his personal decision to cut major military spending and make us weak and vulnerable to attack by our enemies. Obama has not learned his history lessons as he fails to heed the lessons of our beloved WWII citizens - those who faught our wars and made us great. While WWII citizens are becoming less and less each day, we are sadder for it.
Obama should apologize to each and eery World War II veterain; each and every Military person. The writer for this story - is obvioulsy an Obama supporter. Why does he not write about Obama's inexperience and his drug use (cocaine -which is a felon and noted in Obama's book.)
I would rather have an experienced hero and senator in the White House - McCain - then someone who can type 60 words per minute on their coputer.
Perhaps Obama is thinking of appliyg for the secretarial pool?
But that would be an insult to all Administrative Associates - who do very important work each day.
What a stupid ad - the Obama campaign is running scared.
Well, if Senator McCain feels that he can lie, give distortions of the truth, and hire a dishonest woman to get more votes, what is Obama supposed to do? Lay down and take it? Of course not. McCain's age does matter, as does Palin's inexperience. Are we all so stupid that we'd out those two in the whitehouse? Why? So the Bush admin and lobbysists can finish stealing oil in iraq, start a draft AND bring us to a war in Russia so we can steal their oil and PIPE IT IN thru ALASKA?? Come on. Look at credibility. Imagine Palin starts out with ZERO, b/c that's all of us knew about her. THEN, she goes BELOW ZERO, b/c she is WILLING to stand up and LIE to America??? Drop the delusions America.......face the facts. Just b/c she's a woman and he's an old vet, that's NOT enough!!! Give it up for Obama and GIVE THE CHANGE A CHANCE. The only change McCain has made is to STEAL slogans, fight dirty and represent America based on WARS AND DEATH. Let's vote for some fresh blood!!!!! Not sacrifice more!!!!!!!!!!
Senator McCain has to have someone with him everywhere he travels to keep him on message. He is too old. It's been my experience that older people live in the past. Senator McCain seems to have that same problem.

The possibility of Gov Palin being a heart beat away from becoming our President really concerns me. First - We need to fire arlie Gibson for being so timed wit her. What the hell is he afraid of. He is an embarassment to jouralists.. She winked at him and the poor guy lost it from that point on.
Next - stop with thinking that Senator Biden has to take it easy on Gov Palin when they debate because she is a woman... Why should the rules change because she wears a skirt.. We are talking about somebody that may put our country at war with Russia folks... The hell with her skirt and earrings. This is real... This is our lives.
I am sure Senator Biden will use all of his skill, diplomacy and knowledge of the National and International politics to expose her for the light weight she really is.
Senator McCain has showed the USA that he really does not care about the country as he pretends. This choice of a running mate confirms that he is not able to think logically about the long term benefits of the country.
I am sure America (Republicans, Dems, Independents and all others) will wake up and stop McCain's insanity.
Oh, COME ON, People!
My Dad is eighty-seven years old, has Parkinson's AND Alzheimer's AND is blind in one eye, but he can still write and send an e-mail and surf the net.
Here is what John McCain says about using the internet.
Uses Internet to read news & to get donations
Q: We’re interested in knowing how much each one of you uses the Internet. How much time do you spend on it?
A: Not nearly as well as I should. My wife Cindy is a whiz. And when I want to find out what’s on CNN, or The NY Times, or other communist periodicals, I always go to it. But the phenomenal thing about the Internet [is that] we’ve gotten like $7 million in contributions over the Internet. It’s been marvelous. $7 million, because they want reform, they want the government back.

Did he REALLY SAY THAT????????

I'm concerned about McCain's age only because he selected a woman totally unqualified, and almost scary in her views, to be a heartbeat away from running the country. If he loved his country like he professes, McCain should have selected brains, experience and moderation in a running mate. Palin may have us at war with Russia before the November elections with her "cutesy" comments that she uses to camoflauge her lack of knowledge. She even winked at Charlie Gibson...how juvenile. The time for gravitas is here...cut out the school yard humor and "folksy" comments...the voters deserve respect, attention to the issues, less attention to mud-slinging...in case both parties have forgotten, the economy is in the dumps, families don't have access to health care, gas (thanks to Bush and his cronies) is bankrupting families and communities, our sons and daughters are fighting in a war that was unjustified based on faulty interpretations of "intelligence" by Bush and the Republicans, jobs are going offshore, the GDP is declining and inflation is rearing its head. I've always voted the individual not the Party...this year it will be Obama. I would have preferred Clinton as she had a more delineated plan for the country, but I certainly can't vote McCain with Palin standing in the wings!

If the McCain campaign wants to screw Obama on this latest attack ad then they can always play into the veteran's sympathy by letting everybody know that he CAN'T send email b/c of terrible war injuries he sustained while defending this great country. It would pack extra punch if they told about the injuries during a replay of that footage of him returning after his POW stint - that would be a zinger!
Obama/Biden '08!
........................America should consider age as a important element in a Presidents performance over a four term when he is 72 years plus before he takes office. McCain is likely at that age to have extended ilnesses and this very inexperienced V.P. will have to fill in for him during the therm. And it would be very naive to think that a 72 year old will not decline in his performance on the job or realistically have a greater chance to die in office......The Right Wing Of The Republican Party who nominated McCain at the Convention will deny that age has any factor but few intelligent people will believe this posturing that we are hearing now!!!

Reality Bites..Huh
Karl Rove has said the same thing....The Electoral Map, favors Obama [248] all he Needs is [270] and he wins, something you Mccain Addicts and John Mccain himself have Over Looked !!
CNN) -- Sen. John McCain has inched ahead of Sen. Barack Obama in national polls, but the Democratic candidate holds a steady lead in the most recent Electoral College estimates.
In national surveys, McCain leads by 2 points, 47 percent to 45 percent, according to CNN's poll of polls released Monday night.
In the Electoral College standings, the most recent survey shows 243 electoral votes either safely in Obama's column or leaning his way. At this point, McCain can claim only 189.
Many of the state polls used to determine the Electoral College standings, however, were conducted before the conventions.
Monday marked the first time McCain passed Obama in CNN's poll of polls. Watch how the race has tightened »
On Saturday, Obama was up by 3 in the poll of polls. That lead shrank to just 1 point Sunday before disappearing Monday.
In the most recent survey, 8 percent of respondents said they were still unsure about who they were going to vote for.
The poll of polls is an average of five surveys: CNN (September 5-7), ABC/Washington Post (September 5-7), CBS (September 5-7), Gallup (September 5-7) and Diageo/Hotline (September 5-7). The poll of polls does not have a sampling error.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Monday shows McCain and Obama tied at 48 percent.
The poll, which was conducted Friday through Sunday, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. It was based on 1,022 telephone interviews.
Republicans are hoping that if McCain can close the popular vote gap, he can also make gains in the electoral gap. The Electoral College will ultimately decide who takes over the White House.
Although polls across the country are open on one day, the election is not a national poll but a series of 51 state-level elections that decide the members of the Electoral College.
Technically, voters aren't choosing a candidate but a slate of electors who have pledged to vote for that candidate when the Electoral College meets.
With 538 electors up for grabs, the candidate with more than half -- 270 -- wins the presidency. The number of electors from each state equals the number of senators and representatives the state sends to Congress

McCain Top Economic Adviser: He Will Raise Taxes
"Whether you're a Republican, Democrat President or a Martian, Taxes will be Raised"
Though Mccain has said Throughout his campaign "I will Not, Raise Your Taxes"
His Top Economic Adviser says that a LIE....Obama will Raise Taxes on those that make More than 250,000...
The under will have a Tax Break and Tax Cut.
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former Director of the Congressional Budget Office and current chief McCain economic advisor, is an honest man--which means he's something of a liability on the Straight Talk Express. A few months ago, he admitted to my colleague, Michael Scherer, that Barack Obama's economic plan would reduce taxes for most people. And now, in a forthcoming book by Fortune columnist Matt Miller, he makes it clear that the next President is going to have to raise taxes.
"If you do nothing on the spending side, you're going to have to raise taxes whether you're a Republican, a Democrat or a Martian," he tells Miller...and then he immediately makes it clear that the "spending side" part of the argument is nothing more than a political fig-leaf.
NY2008: WHAT A RETARDED EXCUSE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO OPERATE A COMPUTER!!
---------------------------
SR. CITIZENS, MUCH OLDER THAN [GEORGE W. MCCAIN] WHO OPERATE A COMPUTER
THERE ARE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WERE RIGHT HANDED THAT LOST THEIR RIGHT ARM IN AN ACCIDENT WHO OPERATE A COMPUTER ON A DAILY BASIS....
FURTHERMORE, THERE ARE MANY, HANDICAPPED PEOPLE, PEOPLE THAT ARE PARALYZED AND CANNOT STROKE A KEY BOARD AT ALL, THAT OPERATE A COMPUTER VIA VOCAL COMMANDS, I'M TIRED OF THESE [WAR VET EXCUSES] FOR ...
[GEORGE W. MCCAIN] TO HELL WITH HIS EXCUSES...I'M WEARY OF THEM AND THOSE THAT EXCUSE HIM, ALWAYS VIA HIS [WAR WOUNDS] WHICH OCCURED DURING MCCAIN'S AIR CRAFT PARACHUTE & CRASH AS CHRONICLED BY MCCAIN HIMSELF AND NOT BASED ON HIS TORTURE BY THE VIET CONG ON THE GROUND !!!
I'M TIRED OF ALL THESE VIET NAM WAR STORIES...
MCCAIN HAS BEEN LIVING THE LIFESTYLE OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS, FOR OVER 40 YEARS AND STILL YACKS ON AND ON ABOUT HIS VIET NAM WAR STORY.
PS: NONE OF YOU LOW LIFES EVER TALK ABOUT [JIM WEB] & [WESLEY CLARK] WHO FOUGHT ON THE GROUND, COMMANDED TROOPS ON THE GROUND AND WERE INJURED AND REALLY SAVED LIVES !
OPPOSED TO BOMBING GUILTY OR INNOCENT PEOPLE, WITHOUT A THOUGHT, BECAUSE HE HAD THE LUXURY OF FLYING AND BOMBING AREAS. JOHN MCCAIN WAS NOT A [FIGHTER PILOT] HE WAS A [BOMBER PILOT] !!!
OPPOSED TO THAT RAH RAH AT THE RNC, SAYING MCCAIN WAS A [FIGHTER PILOT] TWO WEEKS AGO.
-----------------------
CONSIDER THE COUNTLESS NUMBERS OF SOLDIERS AT THE HANOI HILTON, WHO WERE KILLED OR SEVERELY INJURED, WHO SURVIVED, WHO TO THIS DAY, LIVE OFF MODEST MEANS AND WILL NEVER EVER BE ACKNOWLEDGED IN A BOOK OR NEWS PAPER OR WEBSITE...
JOHN MCCAIN IS SO MUCH HYPE, IT MAKES ME SICK !!!
MCCAIN: "I DON'T TALK ABOUT MY WAR EXPERIENCES"
THATS BORDERLINE BULL-SPIT !!!
MCCAIN HAS TALKED ABOUT HIS WAR EXPERIENCE, FROM DAY ONE, IN THE PRESS, IN THE SENATE, WHEN HE LOST TO GEORGE BUSH JR. WHEN HE RAN THIS YEAR, AT THE RNC AND DURING THE [911 DEDICATION] THIS WEEK...
WHEN HAS HE NOT TALKED ABOUT HIS VIET NAM, MILITARY EXPERIENCES....
NEVER, SINCE DAY ONE, OF COMING HOME FROM VIET NAM, IT FORTIFIED HIS POLITICAL CAREER...
HIS WIFE MILLIONS DID'NT HURT HIM AS WELL..HUH
Perhaps if the Obama campaign was computer-litetrate enough they would have done a simple web search and found out that John McCain can't type out an e-mail or hit the send button without physical pain due to injuries he suffered as a POW,
Not that being capable of using the internet is a good barometer of intelligence, anyway. Just look around folks.
It was not a "claim" that McCain could not remember how many houses he owned: upon receiving the a pointed question from a reporter, "how many houses do you and your wife own?", McCain's response was "I don't know. I will have my staff respond to you on that".
Why is the media - why is Newsweek - covering for this man's confessed inability to remember little details, like say - how many houses he owns? You can make a case for why it is or why it is not important, but what you cannot do is claim that it did not happen.
Furthermore, since when are the claims of PR-types treated as fact? Have you seen McCain send an email? Does he even know what his own email address is? If a man says that he does not do something and that "my staff" brings me things from the internet, is it not reasonable to assume they are doing these things for him as he cannot do them himself? These are McCain's own words voluntarily given as part of his own meandering style of communication. Do we need interpreters to follow around behind McCain and constrantly tell us what he means when he says things like this, or are we free to draw our own conclusions from his statements?
Why are we acting like McCain somehow does not mean what he himself says, or that his words have a different meaning than if they came from anyone else?
Sorry, but this old gal uses the internet all the time to educate herself about world news and what other countries think of us. It is especially enlightening and important to look at news media from other countries to see just where we stand in the world. It ain’t good. I guess McCain thinks that’s not important, but when we need help from others in the world, we’re not going to get it from many countries. Our standing is basically that we are imperialistic, and in the end countries will probably think we will get what we deserve. There could even be some glee out there if it happens.
My computer is part of me. I view most news in video on my computer because I do not always have the time to view it on television. It’s how I “keep up.” To see how little Palin knows about our world scares the Hell out of me. To further see her manipulate information and tack on a bill to the State of Alaska for living at home scares me more. She’s just going along for the ride that just could end up in the Presidency of the United States. If her only real qualification is being a soccer mom, hey – vote for me. I was a soccer mom, too. God help us if she gets her hands on the Nuclear Football.
Hey I know someone who typed a pretty good book with two fingers. I respect McCain for what he endured 40 years ago but I am really tired of it being used as an excuse to let McCain off the hook all the time for everything. The man is "out of touch" and "doesn't get it". However, he can still shot from the hip--look how he picked his running mate--Miss Queen of the Porkbarrel--27 million for her town while mayor (they had never received anything before that) and over 400 million for the State in 2 years as governor, more than any other State. Maybe that is how they will build the federal budget--everyone send in their farvorite hometowm goody and then just add it all up. But don't think we are going to have a change to find out.
How is playing the age card different than playing the race card? Also, for God's sake libs, can't you come up with any reason not to vote for McCain other than generically tying him to Bush? It smacks of desperation.
Words fail me. Almost.
First, we have Joe Biden encouraging a handicapped, wheelchair bound Chuck Graham to stand up for a crowd.
Then we have Obama's Law Review Article, the only one he wrote, on the topic of abortion, where he says the state has an interest in " preventing increasing numbers of children from being born in to lives of pain and despair." Got that? If you are pregnant with a child with a possible birth defect, the state has an interest in you aborting it. So much for Trig Palin.
And now we have the latest ad from the Obama/Biden camp making fun of John McCain for not being able to use a computer or send email. Obama/Biden poke fun at McCain, suggesting he is old and doesn't get the new technology.
One small problem.
John McCain's hands were so severly crushed by his torture as a POW, he can't use a keyboard. It is physically impossible for him. John McCain cannot brush his own hair or tie his own shoes. He is a brilliant man, but he cannot lift one of his arms higher than his elbow. Prior to being tortured and having his bones broken over and over, John McCain could fly jets. So let's not pretend McCain is some doddering buffoon who doesn't understand technology.
John McCain is handicapped.
Obama and Biden are asses.
Obama you fool - McCain doesn't use a keyboard because he can't:, due to the injuries suffered standing up the the vietcong. The is so over!
From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.
http://graphics.boston.com/news/politics/campaign2000/news/McCain_character_loyal_to_a_fault+.shtml
I have seen both the new ads,,, the SLANDERING OF OBAMA untrue lies ad by McCain,,,, and the OLD MAN OUT OF TOUCH MORE OF THE SAME OF MCCAIN,,,, ad by Obama, and there is no untruth in it... simply the same facts that MCCain has stated on tape prior to today.... So,,,, negative ads perhaps,,,,but one is a lie ( Associated Press ) and the other is just a take on McCains own admitting of his age and limitations... one has credibility and one is just dirty campaigning.. and by the man who PROMISED he would not run his campaign on his POW status or and he would run a clean campaign,,,, both now simply promises not kept....
I prefer a person of truth! as will any American wanting to know the truth.
Who wouldn't be annoyed by an interviewer that spoke and acted in a manner in which he was striving to beat up the interviewee? Can you not see that?
Gibson was wrong on the Bush Doctrine. The current Bush Doctrine is to spread liberty and democracy. Gibson has not kept up very well.
Palin answered his vitriolic questions very forthrightly, and everything she said is true. Next time send an interviewer who knows what they're talking about.
It is appalling for me to read that anyone would rather have a President who regularly uses a computer than a President who has the perspicacity to stand up for his country and bring much-needed reform and keep the US safe.
So you are saying that when BO re-destributes everyone's money, makes naive foreign policy blunders and puts the government in charge of every facet of life in the US, you will be glad anyway because he regularly uses a computer (supposing he does regularly uses a computer)?
of the post by corsica (from Eve Ensler)
YOU GO GIRL!!!
wonderful post. Palin scares the begeebies out of me. You can see by her body language during the interview that she was annoyed and that she did not know enough about relevant issues to answer Charlie's questions adequately. Is this what we really need for the next four years? another candidate(s) who keep lying outright to us as if we were ignorant children? Her viewpoints are frightening to the extreme. As far as her standing up for women, she has done just the opposite by squashing some bills to help women in her state, not to mention banning some classic books - someone tell me what's wrong with "Little Red Riding Hood" and "A Wrinkle In Time".
She needs to stop parading around like a well-groomed poodle and let McCain take the lead. last time I checked he was running for president right? Get her off the air. Perhaps, then we can get back to the issues of saving America.
Oh please. So what if McCain can't use a computer! In today's complex global economies, shrewd enemies, rising technological foreign powers, and rapidly changing information infrastructures who needs modern know how. We need to take a few more steps back. It's nice sometimes not being number one in everything. I say bring on a president who lacks the basic understanding of financial systems, computers, economies of scale and currency markets. In fact, I say why not get a VP candidate on the ticket who lacks any understanding of anything. Let's make it even more interesting. American needs a challenge. Let's dig the hole even deeper and see if we can climb out of it. Fun stuff. I'm up for it. The Republicans are up for it. What about you?
Eve Ensler, the American playwright, performer, feminist and activist best known for "The Vagina Monologues", wrote the following about Sarah Palin.
Drill, Drill, Drill
I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last
night that she was a member of a club where they rode
snowmobiles and wore the claws of drowned and starved polar
bears around their necks. I have a particular thing for
Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or their
bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I
have never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is
the fact that they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it
is, I need the polar bears.
I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and
have spent my life trying to build community, help empower
women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write
about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was
all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this
choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.
But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices
is antithetical to Feminism which for me is part of one
story -- connected to saving the earth, ending racism,
empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our
minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.
I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the
most dangerous choices of my lifetime, and should this
country choose those candidates the fall-out may be so great,
the destruction so vast in so many areas that America may
never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the impact
that duo would have on the rest of the world.
Unfortunately, this is not a joke. In my lifetime I have
seen the clownish, the inept, the bizarre be elected to the
presidency with regularity.
Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take
this as a metaphor. In her world and the world of
Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets better or evolves.
She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the
arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the
pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God's
plan. She is fighting to take the polar bears off the
endangered species list. The earth, in Palin's view, is
here to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears are
here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be taken
and plundered. Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As
she said herself of the Iraqi war, "It was a task from
God."
Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion. She does
not believe women who are raped and incested and ripped open
against their will should have a right to determine whether
they have their rapist's baby or not.
She obviously does not believe in sex education or
birth control. I imagine her daughter was practicing
abstinence and we know how many babies that makes.
Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From
what I gather she has tried to ban books from the library,
has a tendency to dispense with people who think
independently. She cannot tolerate an environment of
ambiguity and difference. This is a woman who could and
might very well be the next president of the United States.
She would govern one of the most diverse populations on the
earth.
Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom
Austrian hunting rifle. She has been known to kill 40
caribou at a clip. She has shot hundreds of wolves from the
air.
Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right,
her private right. But when God and Guns come together in
the public sector, when war is declared in God's name,
when the rights of women are denied in his name, that is the
end of separation of church and state and the undoing of
everything America has ever tried to be.
I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we
hold this election in our hands. This vote is a vote that
will determine the future not just of the U.S., but of the
planet. It will determine whether we create policies to save
the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for humans. It
will determine whether we move towards dialogue and
diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence
through invasion, undermining and attack. It will determine
whether we go for oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest
our money in alternatives that will free us from dependency
and destruction. It will determine if money gets spent on
education and healthcare or whether we build more and more
methods of killing. It will determine whether America is a
free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear,
fundamentalism and aggression.
If (as I expect) McCain-Palin are elected, the libs can accuse the conservatives until 2012 of electing "unqualified too-old, too-pretty, and too-whatever-else-they-want-people". With Obama apparently not having a single meaningful adult relationship with anybody that I would want to have in our home and then, in addition, treating me as though I am stupid (listening to HIS lies), calling me bitter and having a vice presidential candidate himself who was in Washington to WELCOME John McCain when he finally arrived....you'll just have to excuse me if I'm not impressed with the comments here railing against McCain-Palin. Just like Mrs. Thatcher with dementia is still 10X the leader that Algore could be, either of the conservative candidates, with their problems, are 10X safer for the future of America than the anti-American Obama and the apparently COMPLETELY out to lunch Biden. How dare you call John McCain out-of-touch? Haven't you had access to any casual news coverage this week and observed the idiocy of your boy Biden? It's not like you guys have a couple of real winners on your hands.
It is just plain frightening to watch Sarah Palin insist that she can just step in and do this job.
It is even MORE frightening to know that she is being taught/briefed by the Bush White House.
Senator McKain is old as am I. That is why it was so important for him to pick the right person for VP. We need to remember that McKain has voted over 90% of the time with Bush.
I don't really believe that he has changed that much but that he is only changing just enough to get elected.
Joy Behar said it best on "The View" when she said that maybe the Republicans should get elected to clean up this awful mess this country is in.
JOHN MCKAIN -- BUSH'S THIRD TERM!!!!!
Romano, the only "cognitive dissonance" I feel this evening is with your article. I don't care if Obama throws every kitchen sink in the US at McCain. It still doesn't compare with the disgusting/diversionary/divisive and appalling tactics being demonstrated by McCain and his campaign. "My friends" he's simply a flat out liar. If your really want to read what "thinking" people have concluded with regard to McCain's tactics..not to mention lack of judgment, please read the article associated with the following link:
http://www.truthout.org/article/mccains-integrity
By the way, where were all of you Obama critics when McCain started this nonsense? Your double standard makes me want to puke.
In the middle of a campaign, when a candidate adopts his opponents slogan of "Change" one hopes he actually knows how to change something besides his slogan. It appears McSame does not. From not learning how to use a computer, not using email, to not bothering to learn about the economy, to voicing the same doctrines and words as his predecessor, Bush, ..............I could go on and on. His age isn't the subject unless of course you want to make it about age. It's about being able to adopt the slogan you espouse. If you don't know how to change, how will you bring change to our country? We will remain in the same rut we have been if we elect this guy who is stuck in the past.
Good article Andrew. Good perceptions. Nice to see someone calling the Obama campaign on the very things they accuse the McCain campaign of doing. Sorry to see that so many people in our country blindly follow and support the democratc statements simply because they are upset with Bush. Not because they have bothered to seriously look at John McCain and decide what kind of man he is, what he believes in and what he would provide as the leader of our country. And I'm sorry to disagree with lexlax but I think Palin is an outstanding choice and, that alone, has me excited about this campaign again.
The only thing bad about this ad is that it makes light of two real issues- our presidential candidate is not up to date with current modes of communication and is very old.
I can see McCain not having a myspace account, but seriously, not using email. Just ridiculous. His age wouldn't be such a factor if he had a better VP behind him, but as we all have seen in the ABC interview, Palin needs a lot of work.
Never thought i'd say it, but since the Palin choice, I have been starting to look closer and closer at the Dems.
Troll, you have a lot of nerve quibbling here considering the bilge coming out of the McCain campaign. In fact, nearly every word coming out of either General McCain's or poor little St. Sarah's mouth is a lie.
Following the logic...
So, if an NFL team consciously drafted a visibly physically handicapped football player as the starting Running Back for the team, and then put that Running Back in the game, you would expect the opposing team not to tackle that Running Back...but allow him to run a touchdown every time he got the ball?
"Joe Namath", now 65 years old, was one of the greatest NFL players to play the game.
So, if an NFL team put Joe in the game today, the opposing team shouldn't try to knock the $#@%! out him?
The logic being used to criticize Senator Obama, in this instance, is actually making the case that Senator McCain is actually too old and debilitated to be President.
If your perception of the ad is that it is implying that Senator McCain is senile, then "your perception" is "your reality."
I found that ad to be a little weak. I think this video I found puts John McCain's age into better perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_FvFi4Vm3M
While it's certainly a shame that the Obama campaign is starting to get "down and dirty," it's not unexpected. If anything, it's a bit late. The McCain campaign has been running negative and untrue ads for weeks, so is it a surprise that Obama is beginning to do the same? This election has merely reinforced the lesson we learned in 2004: that a lie, repeated enough, becomes merely a "falsity," then a "distortion," then a "semi-truth", then...well, you get the idea. Stephen Colbert was right - if it FEELS true in my gut, isn't that all that matters?
Andrew,
I do think the message is that McCain is out of touch and not the RealMcCain anymore. Many people comment about this all the time that he isn't the same person he was before 2000. I think this will be part of the theme that he doesn't get it and that he has bad judgement.
If they wanted to show that he was old and senile, there are many clips of McCain himself talking irreverantly and goofing up, wandering off topic and looking just plain lost on a stage or in an interview. None of that was shown.
Calm down and take another read. It doesn't help Obama campaign to call him senile.
Let's see, now... Joe Biden tells a crippled state senator to stand up, and then Obama's ad mocks McCain for not being able to type... with his broken hands. I originally thought this ad was in poor taste. Then I thought it was risky--might alienate a LOT of older voters who are already iffy about Obama. But now it is revealed as factually flawed in a way that can only hurt Obama.
This is Obama getting tough? How about Obama getting stupid!
Bob Elliott
Don't be a tool, and get a brain of your own.
It was Andrew Romano that HYPOTHISIZED what the ad meant.
Obama never said it. Andrew Romano said he did.
Andrew
You are looking for the age context when it really isn't there. DRAMA! The ad says “out of touch." Andrew you should stay away from making things up because the campaigns will make up all the chimerical reality for you. Just sit back and watch.
Oh well, I know, drama is what sells, but what I took from the ad was that McCain is out of touch.
That he is stuck in the past in various ways. For example, the use of our military. I think McCain is even more hawkish than Bush, and that is very disturbing to me.
See this video for a review of WHY McCain might actually be “out of touch”:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/26665029#26665029
I know you want to make a name for yourself by adding to the drama in the media, but come on.
McCain practically cursed Obama in a plethora of ads. In comparison, Obama's ad is nice.
Keep digging and remember:
The media is only as liberal as the giant corporations that own it.
Maybe Obama will take all the people he considers old and isolate them from the rest of society because they obviously have no value or can do anything.
Very interesting Obama calling McCain "old". Biden became a Senator in 1976, John McCain was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982. In 1988 Joe Biden ran for President and lost. In 1986, John McCain ran for the Senate and won. Now I ask you all, since there are only 5 years difference in their ages and since Joe Biden ran for President and lost, is not this the "kettle calling the pot black". Souce: Wikipedia online.
Let Obama play the Age Card, McCain does not have to play the Race Card. All McCain has to do is to play it straight as the good, decent and honourable man he is.
When Obama Nation gets whipped in the polls, they alway turn to dirt and slander having nothing substantial of any interest to 'real americans'.
God bless America, President George W. Bush and the US Marines
Andrew, I thought of the perfect analogy on the way home. Of course it's a sports analogy (aren't they all?).
Imagine two football coaches. One uses film to study the opposing teams, the other uses modern digital video. While their method of study has literally no effect on their ability to coach, it will fundamentally change the way they call plays and how and when they call them.
It sounds like Barack might be a little "confused" about who he is. McCain probably knows more about how the internet works than most people- he is one of the few senators that read almost all bills cover to cover, and he watches people like a hawk, including the recent ruling by the FCC against comcast for throttling peer to peer traffic from bit torrent. McCain has been exposed to a lot of complex material during his tenure in the senate, and Barack seems to be obsessing over the cons of age, while completely ignoring the pros, such as the vast depth of information and situations McCain has been exposed to. I just think it is cheap to rely to much on your looks to win a contest like this. It reminds me of a kind of a fad to vote for someone with zero experience, just based on their charisma, and looks, or maybe some of these middle aged women need to reaffirm that they are still desirable, and are fantasizing about the Obama type.
John McCain can't use a keyboard because his injuries from his POW days prevent it. He also cannot tie his shoes nor comb his hair. If Obama's campaign had done even the slightest amount of due diligence, they would have learned this. It is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen personally, in terms of political ads.
there's a little more to this story... see
http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=OTliMTNiZjg5ZDEwZWNiZDYwZWFjN2JlNjNjNjkxZmM=
for example:
"Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "extraordinary." The reason he doesn't send email is that he can't use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong in service to our country. From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):
"McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care.
"In a similar vein I guess it's an outrage that the blind governor of New York David Patterson doesn't know how to drive a car. After all, transportation issues are pretty important. How dare he serve as governor while being ignorant of what it's like to navigate New York's highways."
I think you go way overboard in your criticism. If this was an ad the other way around, you would just let it go pretty much. I mean, he has a Mac and he browses the internet a few times a week. Man, that is not computer literate. And, my experience with people who don't do e-mail is that what they really mean is they don't know how to do e-mail. Really.
Come back with your criticism when you can tell me that he knows how to use word, exel, outlook and lotus notes. He can send an email with his self created files attached. I mean, he isn't ever going to get to that. The man is too old. Period.
Andrew, to quote you, "Still, I think it's inaccurate to say that his computer inexperience would hamper his presidency in any real way, especially now that he's making a concerted effort--as Obama's ad fails to acknowledge--to familiarize himself with his Apple laptop."
It's not that computer inexperience would hamper him, and that's not what's being suggested. It's that computer experience is objectively helpful. Being able to intelligently talk about a subject is important. And being able to intelligently talk about a subject as far reaching as the internet is obviously helpful. (I would point you to the brilliant article by James Fallows who wrote about this exact idea earlier today http://jamesfallows.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/the_palin_interview.php )
And the fact that McCain actually needs to take time out of his day (any day) to make "a concerted effort to familiarize himself with his Apple laptop" illustrates my point perfectly. Thank you. Maybe he practices on his laptop while Sarah is practicing her foreign relations talking points. (Was that a low blow?)
Way to win old people votes Obama. Your campaign manager and you are just a genius. NOT
Keep making fun of them and they will show you who is in charge when it comes to vote.
First of all, is obama trying really hard to lose the older vote? This just seems like such a put-down to people that might be over 65 and really find computers intimidating and pointless. Second, not every one has a computer. Some of you might think so and some might think it's the most important thing in the world, but it's not. The phone wokrs just fine for people that want to communicate. I think this is just a silly ad that'll probably backfire. And this is hard hitting? Obama floats like a buuerfly and hits like one too.
First, It is perfectly legitimate to note that someone running for president is confused, that they've lost track, and that they can't remember. Those are traits many people of every age have. You, author, are the only one introducing senility here as the cause.
Second, it is entirely legitimate to point out that someone who claims to be an agent of change has failed to change, has not kept up with three decades of dramatic changes, lives in an insulated and rather princely world of naivete.
Finally, if McCain is senile, and even if there is a increased statistical chance that he will die in office -- those very real concerns are definitely "issues that matter to families." There are genuine reasons people recognize a need to retire, and are encouraged to do so, at around 70.
Ask youself this: When big money is at stake, how many of the world's largest companies would promote a 72 year old to CEO? I'd venture to say that none would (except perhaps, on the rarest occasion, as a figurehead and puppet). And America has so much more at stake.
Your feigned sensitivity to ageism is ridiculous.
I disagree with the basic premise of your post, not.Brit, which is that McCain doesn't possess "a basic understanding of how the modern world works." And I'll quote myself to show why:
Even if McCain had spent some time surfing the Web over the last decade, it's highly unlikely that he would've amassed enough technological expertise to single-handedly craft appropriate public policy responses to recent technological upheavals. I spend about 10 hours a day blogging, Facebooking and researching politics online, and still I'd have nothing whatsoever to add to a White House task force on, say, social networking in the military. It's unlikely that McCain, a 71-year-old senator, would have ever gotten around to exploring anything beyond Yahoo! Mail, Google and Amazon. My parents--both more than 10 years younger than the senator--don't know what "minimizing" a window means, and they use an Apple laptop everyday. In other words, "normal" Internet ability is completely pointless from a policy perspective. That's why you hire and consult with experts, just as you would on farming or immigration issues.
Simply put, it's not fair to assume that McCain can't acquire a broad understanding of technology issues without being a regular emailer. Using the Internet doesn't really contribute to your understanding of tech-related public policy, and legislators (and presidents) regularly make laws about stuff they've never actually experienced firsthand (like, again, farming or immigration). Reader S.M. once provided a perfect example:
[Supreme Court Justice] David Souter doesn't use email/computers at all really (I actually am not sure how often he uses telephones-- I know they had a hard time tracking him down when Rehnquist died and he was up in New Hampshire). But he wrote the opinion in the Grokster case, which as Jeffrey Toobin put it "showed an extremely sophisticated understanding of the very modern technology of file-sharing."
You might prefer a president who emails. (Especially if you're the type of person who's reading and commenting on blogs.) That's fine. In the end, basic computers skills are obviously preferable to utter illiteracy--all else being equal--and as I said I can understand why McCain's apparent lack of curiosity on the subject (and the attendant symbolism) rubs some folks the wrong way. Still, I think it's inaccurate to say that his computer inexperience would hamper his presidency in any real way, especially now that he's making a concerted effort--as Obama's ad fails to acknowledge--to familiarize himself with his Apple laptop.
Andrew, I know you don't think it's important that John McCain is basically unconnected from the internet... but you're wrong. While your arguments have been fine and well reasoned, there is a massive part of the equation that is missing.
Computers aren't simply a new entertainment device like television or the radio. It's not just a new appliance like a washing machine or refrigerator. Every single aspect of our lives is effected by the internet. From banking to books, from airline travel to air conditioning. There is almost literally no part of our lives that could function today without computers. You better believe it's important that the leader of the free world understands some basic principles of the single most revolutionary invention since the movable type printing press (and that is no exaggeration).
In a very real way, when John McCain says that he "never felt the particular need" to use the internet, he sounds contemptuous and dismissive. I may not "feel a particular need" to email either, but that doesn't change the fact that my job requires me to write several a day. Come to think of it, do you know a single person who doesn't have (and actively use) and email address? [Really, think about it. I can't name a single person, including great-grandma.]
Do I want a President who has a basic understanding of how the modern world works? Of course I do. Martin Luther understood the power of the press. FDR understood the power of radio. John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan understood the power of television. Obviously, Barack Obama understands the power of the internet.
It's not that John McCain doesn't have to use email, you're right that his aids can take care of it for him. It's that he exists in a world where using email isn't particularly necessary or important. If that's not completely out of touch, I don't know what is.
And that does matter.
Barack and his campaign can hit his opponent with low blows from afar, but when will he gather up the courage to discuss the issues with John McCain face to face in townhouse forums across the USA?
