If I Made It Snow in August, Would You Give Me Money?

Holly Bailey
It was only a matter of time before the calendar chaos surrounding the upcoming presidential primaries became a factor in fund-raising. On Monday, John McCain emailed supporters to solicit a “significant contribution” within the next 48 hours amid speculation that New Hampshire could move up its GOP primary to early December. “That’s a full month earlier than anyone is currently planning on,” McCain writes. “No one knows for sure if New Hampshire will do this, or even when they will decide. But the one thing I do know is that we must be prepared.” It’s actually a little surprising that it took so long for the primary calendar fight to come up, considering that the scenario of voters heading to the polls before Christmas has been floating around for at least a couple of months now. As far as your Gaggler knows, McCain is the only White House hopeful so far to float the subject in fund-raising appeals--but perhaps that’s because he has the most to lose. After a summer in which Washington all but dug a grave for McCain’s campaign, the Arizona senator has held largely steady in national polls and has enjoyed something of a bounce in New Hampshire, the state that proved so pivotal in his 2000 presidential bid--and will again be important to his 2008 effort. According to the latest American Research Group poll, McCain is at 20 percent in New Hampshire, tied for second with Rudy Giuliani and four points behind Mitt Romney. Compare that number to the group’s August poll, which found McCain at 12 percent. McCain also did better than expected in fund-raising during the third quarter, reporting about $6 million in contributions. McCain advisers are hoping that an infusion of cash--combined with the senator’s solid debate performances and tireless campaigning--can help him score yet another comeback in New Hampshire. Will it happen? As of right now, the answer may be just as elusive as the mystery over when New Hampshire voters will actually head to the polls.
