  • The Weekly Obsession: The Party of Snowe

    Holly Bailey | Oct 16, 2009 02:47 PM

This week in The Weekly Obsession: GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe. She was the only Republican to vote in favor of the Senate Finance Committee's health care bill this week, a decision that not only irked many in her party but set off a literal Snowe-storm, heh heh, of really, really bad puns. Snowe day, Snowe job, Snowe patrol: Seriously people. Make. It. Stop. Here's the latest clip from Newsweek's amazing Sarah Frank.

  • The Weekly Obsession: Public Option Not Dead ... Yet

Is the public option dead? Yes. Oh, wait, no. We can't keep up but, rest assured, the continuing debate over health-care reform made for good TV last week. Here's the latest clip from NEWSWEEK video extraordinaire Sarah Frank.

It's been a big week in Washington, especially for Bo Obama, the recently-promoted presidential pup. Just how big was the news that the first pooch had arrived? Our friends at Newsweek Video pulled together a surprising mash-up of all the coverage. With such a high profile, we wonder if the fifth Obama could soon be getting a PR agent of his own.

Surely New York has enough stores to avoid this sort of thing? Looks like there might be a tanning salon shortage though.

  • Not in the Mood to Mash

    Andrew Romano | Sep 19, 2007 11:07 AM
Last Wednesday, September 12, Yahoo! News, the Huffington Post and Slate magazine co-sponsored the "first-ever online-only presidential mashup" marking the dawn of a new era in the American political process. Or, you know, not.

The plan was actually kind of cool: Yahoo! would give citizen editors (you, me, the odd, nervous fellow next door) access to raw footage of the eight Democratic presidential candidates separately answering debate questions on Iraq, health care and education and then allow them to splice, dice, overdub, caption and spread their new Frankenvideos as they saw fit. The interviews taped Wednesday and, after a brief delay--Yahoo! initially prevented users from doing anything but arranging the clips, playlist-style, by candidate or topic--they went live the next day on Jumpcut, Yahoo's video editing site, with Arianna Huffington offering to highlight the best submissions on the Huffington Post’s homepage. (Co-sponsor Slate, like Newsweek, is owned by the Washington Post Company).

So, one week later, what have the master masher-uppers of America done with all that raw video? Not much.

Your Gaggler could probably spend all day long talking about last night's series finale of "The Sopranos." And truth be told, she pretty much has. (Sorry, boss.) We won't even begin to pick through what it all meant: Did Tony die? Did Tony live? And what was up with that cat? (Adriana lives, people!) Suffice to say, one of the best moments of the night had to have been A.J.'s reaction upon seeing his $30,000 SUV explode in flames because he parked it on leaves during an impromptu hook-up with a high school sweetie. According to A.J., it was just as well. "We need to break our dependence on foreign oil," he declared. President Bush couldn't have said it better. (And Bush even made a cameo--dancing. As did Karl Rove. Talk about a lasting legacy.) At least we're not the only ones consumed. Even the folks cruising the Free Republic forums have found a way to bring the debate full circle. "There is no way that Tony Soprano can be killed," one Free Republic reader wrote. "He is like immigration reform, too much at stake for too many people."

Update: Hillary gets in on the action:

  • Obama's 1984 Moment

    Mark Coatney | Apr 25, 2007 07:08 PM
The SF Chronicle gets all breathless talking about this video for Barack Obama, a play on Apple's best-TV-spot-ever "1984" commercial: The Chronicle sees this as a watershed:
It may be the most stunning and creative attack ad yet for a 2008 presidential candidate -- one experts say could represent a watershed moment in 21st century media and political advertising.
But I'm not so sure. For me, the ad is a little to heavy-handed, and mostly because it's simply too long: At 74 sec, it's 16 seconds longer than the original piece. That's just enough time to go from "Oh, look: Hillary as IBM, and Obama as the plucky Mac. That's clever" to "Alright, already. I get it. What else is on?" Which is, I think, not quite what they're going for. And the original is still better:
