Our top picks for the week
Go to Los Angeles for dineLA’s first annual restaurant week. Indulge in three-course meals from some of L.A.’s top restaurants, like Crustacean and Simon LA, from $15 or $22 for lunch and $25 or $34 for dinner (Jan. 27–Feb. 1 and Feb. 3–8; dinela.com).
Buy “Jukebox,” by Cat Power. Singer Chan Marshall of Cat Power suffered a breakdown, found sobriety and now has put together an inspired collection of reimagined covers by the likes of Sinatra, and Dylan, as well as two of her own tunes. Her voice, always dancing the line between its aching fragility and smoky deepness, proves the point that while this isn’t “soul music,” it’s definitely soulful ($18.98).
Rent “Miss Julie.” This powerful, lyrical 1951 movie of August Strindberg’s classic play about class and sexual debasement—in which the daughter of a count (Anita Bjork) seduces her father’s valet—hasn’t lost its erotic charge. Directed by Alf Sjoberg.
Surf zerotothree.org for its new school-readiness Web site (enter “school readiness” in the search bar). It’s designed to help parents of young kids teach skills like literacy and self-control.
Plan a trip to Ottawa’s Winterlude 2008 (Feb. 1–17; canadascapital.gc.ca). Skate along a canal, slip down a giant snow slide and get into the winter spirit.
